The 5-hydroxymethylthiazole, as an antiviral drug as well as an HIV protease inhibitor, is used for treatment of AIDS and HIV infection. This effective inhibitor of HIV-1 and HIV-2 aspartic protease prevents the generation of polyprotein, which may result in mature HIV granules. By maintaining immature HIV particles, the 5-hydroxymethylthiazole can slow the spreading of HIV, thus avoiding reinfection and delaying disease progression.

The 5-hydroxymethylthiazole, which is a colorless or yellowish oily liquid, serves as an essentical intermediate in the synthesis of ritonavir. The intermediate provides high purity up to or even above 99%, and is packed 50kg/barrel.
