API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient)

API is the acronym of active pharmaceutical ingredient, which can be achieved by chemical synthesis, plant extraction method and biotechnology. API is also called bulk active or bulk drug in medicine.

1. APIs acquired by chemical synthesis are further divided into two categories. One is APIs acquired by inorganic synthesis, and the other by organic synthesis.
(1) Inorganic synthetic APIs are primarily inorganic compounds, and few of them are inorganic elements. They include aluminum hydroxide and magnesium trisilicate which are used for the treatment of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer.

2. Natural APIs can be divided into biochemical APIs and phytochemical APIs. Conventionally, antibiotics are acquired by microbial fermentation. Hence, antibiotics belong to biochemical drugs.
